Our Story

Alphonse Farrugia & Sons Ltd. was set up in 1969 by the present chairman, Alphonse Farrugia. The company began operations as a distributor of beverages and beers for Simonds Farsons plc., the largest internationally acclaimed brewery on the island. The company proved to be quite successful in this venture, and over the years established itself as one of just seven approved Farsons distributors in Malta.

As the market evolved, the need for further growth and diversification started to be felt, and, in 1996, a decision was taken to branch out into the retail sector with the setting up of a new company called Alfsons Enterprises Ltd. Since its humble beginnings, the new company has grown into one of the largest outlets of its kind in Malta.

Apart from beers and beverages, which were practically the only products initially traded by the company, Alfsons Enterprises Ltd. now handles a wide range of wines and spirits, confectioneries, tobacco, groceries, frozen and chilled specialty items for the catering industry and other products related to this particular sector and the consumer. To further improve its position on the market, the company also decided to start importing and distributing its own range of wines and spirits.

Alfsons Enterprises Ltd. is now becoming more and more involved in the direct sourcing of new products, acting as ship chandlers.

Despite their expansion, both Alphonse Farrugia & Sons Ltd. and Alfsons Enterprises Ltd. are still family-owned and managed with a workforce of around 30 employees. This continues to ensure a professional and personal service that is difficult to find in similar companies in Malta.

Finally, it should be noted that Malta is an island archipelago with a population of 430,000. Its main industries are tourism and trading, both of which are directly related to the activities of our companies.
